Grief and Healing

For me the first days after loss were not a flurry of tasks. They were surreal and numb by turns, heavy with remorse. I share what that was like, and pass along the practical wisdom others and grief experts offer those facing arrangements, so you know you only have to get through one hard day at a time.

For the newcomer who is worn out from saying "I'm fine." This one hands you permission to arrive exactly as you are, angry or silent or undone, and reminds you that being not okay is not the same as being broken. You do not have to hold it together to belong here.

This is where I begin, with the phone call that changed everything and the tangled grief that followed. If you have come here in your own hard season, you do not have to be okay to be welcome. Come and sit awhile. This is a letter from one griever to another.

"Now that you have found this place, be gentle with yourself, and give healing a little room to start." -Haynes
